Building our Forever Home

We are Their Shelter, You are Their Future

In 2013, we introduced our donors to a bold and exciting project to benefit southeast South Dakota and Northeast Nebraska: the Heartland Humane Society "We are their Shelter, You are their Future" campaign to help abandoned and unwanted animals.

The first steps on the campaign included a planning study to determine the future needs of our region. Our findings revealed that by 2020, an expected 850 animals will be displaced each year in our area.

In November, 2013, HHS purchased the former Yankton Motor Building from Jack and Judy Gregg. This building gave us the opportunity to assist up to 850 animals annually, housing them in a one-stop adoption facility. But, it wasn't quite move-in ready.

In March, 2014, slight remodeling was completed on the south side of the new building, allowing HHS to move into one-third of the space and provide kennels for our feline population.

Since then, the Board of Directors has been fundraising to complete the project. A total $850,000 will be needed to finish the interior and outside fenced areas. Additional monies will be needed in the future for exterior upgrades to the property.

Over 150 donors have helped raised over $700,000. We need a total $850,000 to provide over 27 canine kennels, emergency holding spaces, outside runs, and a veterinary suite.

To accomplish this, we need your donations and help. Please watch the below video to find out why this campaign is so important to us and our surrounding communities.
